Voluntary Benefits
Enhance your coverage with additional protection from Colonial Life and Lincoln. Most benefits are employee-paid, though some (like Short-Term Disability) are fully employer-paid. These benefits pay cash directly to you when life throws the unexpected.
Eligibility
Available to all benefits-eligible full-time employees
Colonial Life voluntary benefits (Accident, Critical Illness, Hospital Indemnity, Health Screening) are employee-paid via convenient payroll deduction. Short-Term Disability from Lincoln is fully employer-paid. You can also enroll your spouse and eligible children in employee-paid benefits. Elections are made in Employee Navigator during Open Enrollment.
Why Consider Voluntary Benefits?
Medical insurance covers a lot — but not everything. Voluntary benefits help fill the gaps.
Cover deductibles & copays
Even with strong medical coverage, out-of-pocket costs add up. Voluntary benefits help bridge the gap.
Replace lost wages
A serious illness or accident can keep you out of work. Cash benefits help replace income while you recover.
Pay for travel & lodging
Unexpected medical care often comes with travel, hotel, and meal expenses for you or a loved one.
Cover daily living costs
Mortgage, rent, groceries, child care — daily life doesn’t pause when you’re sick or hurt.
Accident Insurance
Pays cash benefits directly to you when an accident happens — helping cover deductibles, copays, transportation, and everyday expenses.
What’s Covered
- Emergency room & urgent care visits
- Fractures, dislocations, and concussions
- Burns, lacerations, and eye injuries
- Ambulance and air ambulance transport
- Hospital admission & confinement
- Physical therapy and follow-up care
- Diagnostic imaging (X-ray, MRI, CT)
- Accidental death & dismemberment
Key Features

- 24/7 coverage — on or off the job
- Family coverage available
- No medical questions to enroll
- Use the money however you choose
- Benefits paid in addition to medical insurance
Example Scenario
Your child breaks an arm at soccer practice. After the ER visit, X-rays, casting, and follow-up appointments — your Accident plan can pay you a lump sum to cover the medical deductible and out-of-pocket costs.

Before electing Colonial Life's Short-Term Disability plan, carefully review your Lincoln coverage to ensure you are not over-insured. Consider your personal circumstances, such as whether you want additional coverage beyond the $1,000/week Lincoln maximum, or if you prefer a shorter elimination period than the 8-day Lincoln standard.
